Clear Lake's version of the Wednesday Night Sailboat Races has one of the best venues in the country for allowing spectators to watch a yachting event. Although sailboat races are usually held far from shore, where watching from a rocking motorboat might become somewhat uncomfortable, Clear Lake's Wednesday Night Races could not be a more pleasant or relaxing experience. With the prevailing breeze from the south, the docks in front of the restaurants and clubs along the fully developed northern shore gather crowds of people who sip drinks, enjoy friendly conversation, and watch as the sailboats maneuver for position at turning marks placed just thirty yards away. In the west, the sun converges on the horizon, and the sky slowly blooms into an unpredictable sunset. On the water, the sailboats are dressed out in their downwind splendor, sporting their colorful spinnakers, some of which carry company logos and graphics. Cameras click away as color in the sky and on the water combine with the steadiness of a dock to provide great shots of sailboats in action. In the homes along the shores of our small lake, untold numbers of people gather to witness the weekly spectacle. The Wednesday Night Sailboat Races have been around for about twenty five years, and the event has good name recognition in the greater Houston-Galveston area. It is a growing event with established sponsors, and it even has radio advertising in conjunction with the Seabrook Beach Club and Faust Distributing. Have a look at our pictures page to get a sense of the event's popularity, then come down some Wednesday and experience it yourself!
